After watching Lucky rapidly decline over the last several days, we decided to send him to Doggie Heaven this afternoon. He was born December 21, 1999 and passed away today, October 3, 2008. He was almost nine years old. Throughout the last couple of months, since he was diagnosed with heart failure, he hung in there really well. He was still wagging his tail, getting around pretty good and chewing his rawhides (his favorite pastime). Then, earlier this week he began to have trouble breathing, he couldnt get around and he didn't even want his rawhide. We were up with him from about 3-4:30 this morning and he was really struggling. This morning when I was getting ready for work, Jared came and sat next to me and said that he thought it was time to let him go to Heaven. Jared called Dr. Derik and thankfully he said he would come to the house, what a blessing. I didn't want to be here to watch him go, so Jared took care of getting him buried. We planted a tree in memory of him in our backyard. We wanted to bury him here because this is the place he lived the longest and it is our first home together as a family. We are so very sad to say the least and although to some people he may have been just a dog, to us he was much more. I have always known that people are either animal lovers or they aren't, there doesn't seem to be much of an in between. So for all of you animal lovers out there, you know what we are feeling. For those of you that aren't, I wouldn't recommend getting a pet, it just wouldn't be fair to them.
Tonight we went on our usual nightly walk but this time it was just the four of us. Although it was really sad, it also felt peaceful and like a new beginning. I know that it will take a while to get used to not having him around, and we will sure miss him. Thanks to everyone that was so supportive today during such a hard time, we know tomorrow will be better.
Here are a few pics of the tree that we planted for Lucky. Hope you all have a good weekend!!

Sarah and Jared,
I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember when we lost Tank and Jessie and it was so sad. Right now Lucky has no more pain and he's going to watch over you guys in Heaven.
I am so sad to hear about Lucky. I know how much love a dog can give and how special a man to dog relationship can be. It is comforting to know that Lucky wouldnt have done anything different in his life, he wore his heart on his sleeves and loved at all times. He knows he gave Jared everything he had. He always joyfully welcomed his masters home and never held grudges. He had no regrets in his life. What an exemplinary life he led!! He will be missed.
